PATRIOTISM AND THE DECLINE OF A CHRISTIAN NATION - PART III


The grand words of the Declaration resonate within our souls: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among those are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." And they signed the document putting their lives on the line in resistance to a state church and the divine right of kings. As John Adam said just before signing: "All that I have and all that I am, and all that I hope in this life, I am now ready to stake upon it; and I leave off as I began, that live or die, survive or perish, I am for the Declaration."

"Come, let us reason together."  - Isaiah l.18

Faith and reason have been in dialogue for centuries.  Ever since the beginnings of religion, and ever since the beginnings of philosophy, especially with Socrates (469-399 B.C.E.), faith and reason have been in dialogue.

 

Faith needs reason to rescue it from narrowness, dogmatism and fanaticism.  Reason needs faith to rescue if from rigidity, outmoded intellectual concepts and conceit.

 

Dialogue means to “speak through” the issues to gain understanding. It suggests mutuality more than confrontation.  It suggests conviction with humility more than assertion with arrogance.

 

Peter’s First Letter says, “Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence….”  I Peter 3:15)

 

It is my hope these dialogues will be helpful to many.
